L’Iliade is studying the potential of the Alp’s mining history.
The mining industry of the Alps dates back to the Roman empire, and was last active in the years following World War II. Various minerals and metals were worked during that time at different scales, whithout however reaching the magnitude that we know today.
Mercury and other pollutants were omnipresent during the industry’s last decades, and the mines were in most cases not cleaned up before closing. Today this poses a serious environmental problem, contaminating the grounds of one of Europe’s most beautiful landcsapes.
L’Iliade wishes to apply its tailings rehabilitation programm to this problem, and is currently studying the means by which this could be achieved.
